Selphie was born on a rainy night in the back of a bakery. The mother and father were hiding from their debt that they owed on their land. The land had been stripped from them and now they were saving their lives in order to save their daughters. The child was born into a warm room and slept on a bed made of old breads. A friend owned the bakery and had bought flour from the couple and was sorry that they were having to hide from the tax collectors. He hid them for the last four months of Selphie’s gestation. Her father and mother watched the child and dreamed of the freedom she may one day have.
The family’s happiness of living with a newborn was cut short within the week. A neighboring shop owner, whose wares weren’t selling, had reported the expectant mother to the authorities for a hefty reward. In the middle of the night, the bakery was stormed and the Tillmitt’s were roughly pulled from sleep. Selphie, nestled in her stale breads, was safe from the danger of the prison or work house. The baker took Selphie as his own second daughter and raised her. She became the only daughter after his biological daughter married and the left the chaotic town. The baker refused to let Selphie see her parents. The reality was that her father was dying in prison and her mother has been shipped off somewhere to work out her debt. Selphie, instead, bagged the breads and crackers for customers.
But the baker was old and his health was failing. The bakery was suffering due to the economic down shift in the city. People barely had the money or goods to barter. Selphie would sit with the old man and watch the sun and he would tell her stories of his daughter that had fled the city, hoping some day that Selphie would do the same. Selphie held his hand one night. It was a chilly evening and she knew he shouldn’t be out. But the old man’s eyes were soft and reflective and she couldn’t bear to take him inside. She gave him a hug and a kiss and went inside to clean up for the day. When she came back to bring him to bed, he was dead.
Debt collectors took away the shop and once again left Selphie without a home or a family. Doing what she needed to survive, she ducked into the alley ways of the city. She had been this way for six months. She had missed the birthday role he would make her with a cherry on tip as her twelfth birthday came and went. She desired nothing more than a warm bed and someone to love her.
